God's Will vs Our Will

Q: Can you give a sermon about God's Will vs Man's or our will?

A: We can't guarantee a sermon, but we can certainly address the topic  here. The question implies a  belief that God is an entity that has a plan or desire for us. Unity does not believe in an external (or internal) God that has human attributes such as thinking, wanting, remembering, or feeling. God is divine energy, continually creating, expressing and sustaining all creation. God is all there is, and God is the Source of all. God does not love us; God is Love. God isn't wise; God is Wisdom.

Since God is all there is, our Essence is also of God. In Unity we call it our Christ nature.  If there is a divine imperative, it is to live from this aspect of ourselves, thus bringing the fullness of God into expression. So we can say that God doesn't have a will for us; rather God is our Willingness to express our Divinity.

In Unity we also speak of the power of Will as one of our 12 Powers or spiritual abilities. This concept was created by Unity's co-founder Charles Fillmore and is unique to Unity. Will is the directing power of our mind.  It is the ability to choose, decide, command, lead, and determine. Through our will we can choose our good based on spiritual understanding. WHY DO WE NEED GOD?

Q: Why do we need the concept of "God" or "Spirit"? If we didn't have these concepts, what would we talk about?

A: In the strictest sense, it's not a matter of 'need', but  how we choose to be in the world. I think we can all admit there is more to life and the Universe than what we can perceive with our senses. There is something more that lies both beyond and within each of us. "God" and "Spirit" are the names we give to the connecting creative Presence in the Universe. It is what we are at our core. It goes by many other names...Atman, One Mind, Tao, All That Is, just to name a few.

In Unity we also refer to it as our Christ Nature or Christ Consciousness. Our spiritual and life practice is to transform or align our human personality with our Christ Nature. The human personality tends to live from fear and separation, which leads to poor life choices. When we live from our Christ Nature, our choices tend to be more loving and compassionate. This is not to say we couldn't be loving and compassionate without aligning with a concept of God, but it's also about a deeper experience of ourselves... our Soul.

If we didn't have "God" or "Spirit" we would probably still be talking about the deepest part of our self, about the mysterious connectiveness of the Universe, and everything in between.  And ultimately, all words, names, and concepts fail to accurately describe what can only be experienced without words.
