Akosua Washington-Woods
Youth & Family Ministry Director

Akosua is a Licensed Unity Teacher (LUT) in both Youth & Family Ministry and Adult Education. She is the Youth & Family Ministry (YFM) director, as well as a Prayer Chaplain, and a SpiritGroups co-team lead at Unity of Gaithersburg. She loves facilitating small group ministries. She is currently studying at the Unity Urban Ministerial School, along with teaching on a weekly basis in Sunday School.
Akosua is a griot; (a storyteller) and writer. Some of her other interests are ethnic crafts; particularly dollmaking. Her dolls are made from clothespins, wooden kitchen spoons, tongue depressors and ice cream scoops. She enjoys arts ministry and looks for opportunities all the time for using the arts in teaching. One of her other passions is social justice; and she incorporates that in her arts and children’s ministry.
One of her favorite pastimes is travel; and she has traveled in the US, Europe, Africa, Canada and lately in Mexico and the Caribbean quite frequently. She enjoys a great debate with anyone and gets jazzed up when she can listen and learn. She is a grateful member of Al-Anon and has a weekly 12-step practice. She has a daily prayer and meditation practice to stay grounded and connected.

Deletta Gillespie

Deletta Gillespie is a multi-disciplinary teaching and performing artist, playwright, author, and singer/songwriter. Currently an Assistant Professor of Theatre at Morgan State University, Gillespie earned a BA in Liberal Arts from Goddard College, and an MFA in Theatre Arts at Towson University. She also studied Musical Theatre performance at Highline College in Seattle, electronic media at the University of Oklahoma, and Creative Writing with the Writers Bureau in the UK.
Gillespie is also a playwright, and has written plays including First Encounters of the Discriminatory Kind, and What a Girl Wants. Her play U-Turn received an honorable mention in Seattle’s Stone Soup Theatre’s Double X Playwrights Festival. Additionally, she has created and performs two cabaret shows: Good and Yummy, and Songs of Protest – Songs of Peace.

Gillespie is an accomplished vocalist and has released a collection of songs on an album entitled Triumphant.She has opened for artists including Daryl Davis, Patti Austin, the late Al Jarreau, and British music icons Paul Carrack and Judi Tzuke.

Gillespie was the director of the music ministry at The Spiritual Empowerment Center (CSL) in Baltimore for seven years, and was the featured musician and speaker at the Centers for Spiritual Living in Laurel, MD for three years. She currently serves as the director of the music ministry at Unity of Gaithersburg.
She is a member of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP), the Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE), and SAG/AFTRA, the Baltimore Blues Society, and the National Association of Black Storytellers.

Keith joined Unity of Gaithersburg in 2005 and immediately became a member of the A/V team. He has also served on the Board in the roles of secretary and later as treasurer. Keith maintains our computers and other IT resources, drawing on his 36 year career as a software developer and IT director. In addition to Unity, Keith pursue spiritual studies with the Movement of Spiritual Inner Awareness. He is a member of the Artists on Market gallery in the Kentlands, where he shows his photography. He has self published two books of his photography, which includes writings for each photogtaph. Keith enjoys gardening with his wife Kerry, who is also a member of Unity of Gaithersburg.

Hi, I’m Luis Amaya. When I’m not working, you’ll often find me outdoors, enjoying time with my dog and staying active. I’m also married, and one of my favorite things to do is explore new restaurants and enjoy good food with my wife. I’m really excited to be a part of the Unity team and am eager to contribute and help in any way I can.
